Released a full decade after the Range Rover, the Land Rover 90 and 110 were designed to modernize the Land Rover Range. Featuring new, more powerful engines, the 90 and 110 were meant to show the world that its favourite off-roader could maintain control with a vastly more powerful engine.
The Land Rover 90 and 110 marked a radical shift for the Land Rover Company. Not only did they represent an effort to modernize following 10 years of relative creative inactivity, but they also saw the company chase the high-performance market -- necessitating a more engine and greater emphasis on aerodynamic cab design, leading to many subtle but noticeable changes in the design language.
This change became all the more noticeable when the range was re-christened as the Land Rover Defender, following the release of the Land Rover Discovery. Because of the new mode, the Land Rover Defender had to differentiate itself -- which it did by doubling down on its ability to go off-roading, even compared to the rest of the Land Rover range.
