The story of the Land Rover Discovery Series/Mark 1 is a long one. Originally developed by Land Rover in Solihull, England, the Land Rover Discovery was the first Land Rover positioned to be a family car from the beginning. As such, it was designed to be effective both on the road and off it.
You can trace the lineage of the Discovery straight back to the Range Rover. The Discovery 1 featured the same chassis, suspension and four-wheel drive version of the Range Rover, and its body was clearly derivative of the Range Rover. However, because its engine was smaller (as well as a number of other reductions) the Discovery 1 was noticeably cheaper than the Range Rover.
However, the Land Rover Discovery was not an instant success. Possibly thanks to it only having three doors (including the boot) and a slightly smaller engine, the general public didn’t immediately flock to the brand new Discovery. As a result, only 64 models were sold in Discovery’s first year. It was not until the year afterwards, and the release of a five-door version, that the Discovery took off.
Today, these first Series 1 vehicles are prized by collectors and people who appreciate high-quality vehicles the world over.
