Defender (L663)
Defender (L663) Parts
Originally introduced in the early 1980s as the Land Rover 110 and Land Rover 90, the Land Rover Defender marked the company’s first attempts to modernise, following the introduction of the Range Rover in 1970. These new models featured modern features, like a coil-based suspension system and a series of progressively more powerful engines. For the rest of the 1980s, the Land Rover 110 and 90 were staples of the Land Rover range.
But nothing lasts forever. Following the release of the Land Rover Discovery in 1989, the Land Rover 110 and Land Rover 90 were combined into a single range and re-christened the Land Rover Defender. This new model quickly became the default model of the Land Rover range and was beloved by Land Rover fans all over the world. In fact, the original Land Rover Defender was in continuous production for the next 26 years.
End of an Era
Production of the original range of Land Rover Defender ended in 2016 -- with the last Defender 90 rolling off the Solihull production line at 9:22am on Friday 29th January 2016.
Rebirth of the Land Rover Defender
But the Land Rover Defender didn’t stay out of production for long.
In 2019, Jaguar Land Rover unveiled the brand new Land Rover Defender at the Frankfurt Motor Show. For the first time, the Land Rover Defender wouldn’t be either a 90 or a 110. The new Defender was christened the L663 after its codename.
The L663 is the first iteration of the Land Rover Defender without any holdover technology or parts from a previous model. Not the Land Rover's Wheels, its engine, or its alarm was carried on from the previous iteration. It was a completely new animal.
The L663 Land Rover Defender features permanent all-wheel driving, locking differentials, and an aluminium unibody design, as opposed to the original’s body-on-frame construction. While the technology and parts are new, the passion and engineering that made the original Land Rover Defender such a success remains.
