Released in 2004, the Land Rover Discovery 3 was an iterative update on the already fully-grown and established Land Rover Discovery line. Like previous models, the Discovery 3 was designed as a vehicle for the entire family: one that is just as comfortable handling the rigours of off-roading as it is the stress of city driving. However, the Discovery 3 wouldn’t be a small, iterative update – it would mean a noticeable sea change in the way Land Rovers are built and designed. These changes permeated throughout the Rover company, and many of them can still be seen in the way Land Rovers are designed and built to this day.

In 1999 Land Rover released the Discovery 2, a refresh of the original Discovery launched back in 1989. This designed features an updated rear, allowing for optional jump seating, as well as a 3 and 5 door option.
Fifteen years on and the Discovery range experienced its biggest ever overhaul. Launched in 2004, the Discovery 3 marked a design revolution, bringing a motoring icon into the well and truly into the 21st century. The exterior was altered as the rear was extended to ensure that boot space was used to its fullest potential. Pocketed headlights were also introduced, whilst the turn signals were moved to high-side fixtures. The interior was also upgraded to make it even more comfortable, meeting the demands of the modern Discovery owner.
Under the bonnet, we had some groundbreaking changes. A new engine was introduced, an inline five-cylinder 2.5 litre diesel. This produced more power and offered superior fuel efficiency. The V8 was also upgraded to a 4.0 litre and a new exhaust was fitted to enhance performance more. For the first time, electronic off road systems were also added, this included traction control, electronic brake distribution and hill descent control. It’s safe to say that the Discovery 3 offered a bold new take on a classic vehicle, fusing radical styling and high tech features with what is an iconic off road vehicle.
