The Eden Project is a conservationist exhibit St Blazey, Cornwall, which recently enjoyed success in deploying the world’s first Electric Defender. The vehicle was first showcased in March of 2013 at the Geneva Motor Show and was introduced at the Eden Project this summer.
Environmental Defender Protection:
Land Rover have introduced this new model the Defender as part of their overall sustainability objectives. Amongst these include a shift to using aluminium platforms in the all the latest Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover hybrid models. The electric defender play the role of a guinea pig in developing more new ideas about applying electrified automobiles to a real-world environment. We’re please to see that the environment can benefit from a touch more Defender protection. The Land Rover was always made with the environment in mind, so it’s natural that the Defender is taking its next step towards environmental preservation.
The electric model in use is based on the Defender 110 model and was engineered in-house specifically to function as an ‘All Terrain Electric Research Vehicle’. In its current form, this type of electric Defender 110 would be primed to take advantage of all the Defender protection tools that we already offer. The vehicle has a permanent four-wheel drive and has a top speed of 70mph.
The result of this project is a vehicle with absolutely zero tailpipe emissions. It can maintain low-speed off-road use for eight hours and takes 10 hours to charge (although this can be reduced to four with the use of ‘fast-charge’ technology). As the petroleum market waxes and wanes, it’s promising to see companies like Land Rover experimenting with environmentally friendly alternatives.
