The Discovery Sport drove into action in September 2014 as the replacement for Land Rover’s Freelander 2. Being the third generation SUV from Land Rover, it was closely related to both the Freelander 1 and Freelander 2. More compact than its larger relative the original Discovery, these smaller 4x4’s are all based on the D8 steel platform. In this case, the Discovery Sport was part of the revision of the range with the Discovery name being recognised as a sub brand. The first Discovery Sport used the same engines as the Freelander 2, a 2.2-litre diesel sourced from Land Rover's owner at the time Ford. The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine was installed into the vehicle in 2015 and are specific to Jaguar land Rover. The Ingenium power units are a range of modular turbocharged engines of four cylinder, 2.0-litre capacity, built around individual 500cc cylinders. Available in 5 or 7 seat variants, the additional 2 seats are only intended for occasional use, folding flat to enable a spacious load area. The Sport differs from the larger Discovery by being of unibody construction, whereas the latter is a traditional body on frame build. Its bodywork - the bonnet, wings, roof and tailgate are made from aluminium to save weight. The styling takes strong design cues from the Range Rover. While being a far cry from its rugged Land Rover ancestry, the “Disco Sport” is arguably a more practical alternative to its luxury sister the Range Rover Evoque. Performing well off road it offers the same clearance as a Freelander 2 and an improved wading depth by 100mm. On the road it drives well and being the smallest Land Rover model delivers on manoeuvrability, with plenty of family friendly features and good safety.
