Launched in 1989, the Discovery 1 was designed as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover. For this reason, it shares many similarities with the Range Rover including its chassis, suspension and four wheel drive system. Key points of difference in the first ever Discovery vehicle are its smaller engine, longer rear, and the fitting of the spare wheel to the side-swinging rear door.
